
Indian policemen beat a Kashmiri shiite mourner during the moharram procession in central Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, 18 January 2008. Police fired tear smoke shells and resorted to heavy cane charge to disperse hundreds of shiite mourners as the local administration have banned any type of processions in the Civil Line areas of Srinagar city. Moharram, the first month of Islamic calander is observed around the world for ten days of mourning in the rememberance of martydom of Imam Hussain, the grand son of Prophet Mohammad.
