Kashmiri villagers try to comfort brother of a Kashmiri student Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, who was shot dead by paramilitary troopers in Srinagar on Wednesday, as he wails near the grave of his brother in Ashtengu, some 65 kms northeast of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, Thursday, 10 August 2006. Police on Wednesday claimed that they shot dead a man who they said was preparing to throw a grenade at them. However residents took to the streets soon after, shouting slogans against the security forces and alleging that the man killed was an innocent civilian waiting on the road for a bus and was killed to avenge the Aug. 1 killing of two paramilitary soldiers in the same neighborhood. Police later confirmed that the Sheikh was a college student.
